The $1.55 per month enhanced 911 surcharge on telephone lines was established by referendum in November 1983. Smith was hired as coordinator in May of 1984 and the system went live in near record time in September of 1997. 911 calls from Herrin, Energy and Johnston City are answered at the Herrin Police Department. The Marion Police Department handles landline calls from within the city limits and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department answers the rest. A statewide 75 cent per month surcharge on cell phones went into effect in 2000.
The Williamson County 911 centers dispatch for 13 police departments, 12 fire departments and 6 ambulance services. The centers feature EmergiTech 911 equipment, Orbacom touch screen radio consoles, Xybix ergonomic dispatch furniture, state of the art GIS mapping systems, and Exacom recording equipment.
The Williamson County 911 Office is the addressing agency for the county, except the city of Marion, and is in charge of road name approval. There is an ordinance requiring that all residential and commercial addresses be marked clearly. The 911 Office has produced a large color atlas of the county, on sale for $15 at the county clerk’s office as well as Herrin and Marion city halls.
